Qt OpenGL VBO's and Shaders

I am working on moving some code from using a less than stellar gui library to Qt. I was wondering if it possible with Qt 4.7 on Ubuntu 10.04 with OpenGL version 2.1 to use vertex buffer objects and shaders in a widget. I have spent a large amount of time looking through and testing example code but all examples that I have seen use OpenGL version 3.0 and above and Qt 4.8. If it is possible would someone please give me an example or some direction as to how to I can accomplish this?
