Platform independent inter-application communication

Hi guys,

I've been helping a set of applications for work, and one of them needs to be able to 'open' files in the others. In an ideal world I'd be able to use QtDBus and the IPC level signal/slots mechanism, however Windows is the primary platform. What do people recommend? I'm currently trying to decide whether to go down the route of using something like QLocalSocket and working through it that way.

It's annoying as I don't need to transfer much information, just an ID number, but I'd prefer to do it with as little overhead as possible. Any suggestions would be most welcome!
