Oslo, Norway - June 10 2005
The Qt 4 Release Candidate is now available, providing a feature-complete preview of Trolltech's leading C++ application development framework on all supported platforms. This Release Candidate represents the final preview of Qt 4 before the final release scheduled for late June.
The Release Candidate includes all of the features and functionality slated for final release of Qt 4 - and from now until launch, development efforts will be focused on addressing critical stability issues only.
The Release Candidate reveals refinements to key new technologies - Arthur: a powerful painting engine; Interview: an improved model-view controller framework; and Tulip: a collection of new tools and utilities classes. In addition, this release introduces several new features and capabilities set to appear in the final release of Qt 4, including:
Pre-built binaries for Mac OS X and Windows, enabling significantly faster installation and use of Qt
Completely refreshed and re-engineered Qt demos and examples, showcasing the new and improved capabilities of Qt 4
The many improvements incorporated into Qt 4 will be offered to commercial customers through a new packaging structure. The current Qt editions will be replaced with Qt Console: an all-new edition of Qt optimized for non-GUI development; Qt Desktop: providing a comparable feature-set to that found in the current Enterprise Edition; and Qt Desktop Light: replacing the current Professional Edition with comparable functionality. New and existing customers who purchase a Qt 3 license prior to Qt 4 launch will be upgraded to the corresponding Qt 4 edition at no additional cost.
Beyond Qt 4
During the months following the launch of Qt 4 additional focus will be placed on ongoing additions and improvements to Qt, Qt Solutions and QSA. To provide Qt customers with an overview of coming developments, a schedule of priority feature additions and improvements for future point and maintenance releases will be published on
www.trolltech.com with Qt 4.0.
To support the active development and expansion of Qt Solutions - a growing collection of plug-in components and tools for Qt projects - Qt Solutions will be made available as a stand-alone product, with updated solutions planned for periodic release in the months following Qt 4 launch.
A version of QSA updated to support Qt 4 will be made available to customers during 2005.
The scope and importance of embedded Linux development has grown significantly in recent years, evolving into a principal strategic focus area for Trolltech. In response to this expanding opportunity, Trolltech's next-generation platform for embedded Linux development will be available during the period following the launch of Qt 4. More detailed product and roadmap information will be communicated at Qt 4 launch.
